week of lAnGUAGeS And CUlTUReS
During the Week of Languages and Cultures in September 2013, there were a
range of activities happening in the school.
On Monday, in PE, we learned how to play cricket when Bilal and two others from
Pakistan came to teach us how to play. All of second year enjoyed learning how
to play a new sport.
On Tuesday, Ms Poyntz arranged for Pauline Beadle to come in to teach us about
Malaysian culture and food. She cooked chicken stir-fry and she made prawn
crackers too. We tried new foods and tested chilli peppers.
In Ms McElwaine’s class we made posters on different countries connected to our
school. Information on the countries (such as food, clothes, music, geography,
history, tourist attractions) was displayed on the walls in the hallways along with
posters teaching us how to say hello and lots of basic phrases in lots of languages
with connections to our school. Also the importance and benefit of learning
languages.
In French class, people who had connections with other countries stood up and
told us about what life was like there. They spoke about the different languages,
the clothing and the housing and different aspects of their culture. Ms McElwaine
did a presentation on Peru where she had volunteered. We learned a lot about the
different countries.
On Friday pupils dressed up in traditional clothes from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Benin,
India, and England. They had a fashion show for the first years and gave some
information on the clothing.
The week of languages and cultures was a huge success in our school as we
learned the importance of learning another language. Learning about different
countries was interesting and the students are looking forward to next years
Week of Languages and Cultures.
