MULTI-CULTURAL WEEK
Week of Languages and Cultures
Since 2012, the Royal School Cavan has held a ‘Week of Languages and Cultures’ each September. It
began as an extension of the European Day of Languages celebrated 26 September each year. The
idea is to celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures connected to our school community.
Through pupils, their parents and also staff, we have had links with approximately 30 countries over
the past 3 years, and we have spoken 22 languages, from basic to fluent.
We try to have activities for all years so as much of the school as possible can take part.
• Pupils with knowledge of another language teach their peers.
• The whole school is encouraged to speak some basic phrases in another language through
hallway displays.
• Many pupils taught us about their cultures at the student expo.
• 2nd years learnt about Pakistan - its culture, language and food, from a visiting speaker. Huge
thanks to Samera who gave a great presentation.
• Thanks also to Mr Pierce who taught 2nd years all about life and culture of the USA.
• TY pupils Shoko and Minami taught origami to the 1st years.
• 1st years played ‘Boules’ (traditional French game).
• TY organised a quiz for 3rd years.
• 1st years enjoyed a French breakfast.
• 5th years watched an Italian film - “La vita è bella”.
