SCienCe week
Science week this year took place in November. All second years had to
get into small groups and carry out experiments. We had to get advice
from our Science teachers and research how difficult the experiment
would be to carry out and the health and safety issues involved.
We had four weeks to carry out and write up our experiment. On the day
of the competition we gathered in the schoolroom to set up. Each group
had to present their project to the judges, using posters, PowerPoint
slideshows or a miniature model of the actual experiment. The
competition was tough as each group had chosen such interesting and
unusual experiments. We had to explain why we chose our particular
experiment, how we carried it out, what we thought our results would
be and what our actual results were!! The judges spent about 10 minutes
with each group and asked a lot of questions.
After they had circulated the entire room and spoke to everyone about
their experiment, they went to a separate room to discuss potential
winners. While they were gone, the first years came in and looked at
our experiments, asked us loads of questions and got ideas for their
experiments for next year. Then the judges came back in and announced
the final winners………….. James Crosfield, Danny McKeon and
Alex Filmer for their research into “How energy drinks affect athletic
performance”. We were all disappointed we hadn’t won but happy for
the boys as well. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience and we all
learned a lot from it!!
