                                                     Maths Eyes

In Transition Year our maths teacher, Ms Gray, encouraged us to enter a competition called ‘Maths
Eyes’ during Maths Week 2014. For this competition we had to take a picture of an everyday
object and try to think of a maths related caption to put on the picture. We all took pictures
and captioned them. They were entered into the competition. The picture which I entered was a
picture of a visitor car park space. I captioned it ‘how many ways can you rearrange the letters of
this word?’ A few months later, to my surprise, Ms Gray came to tell me that my entry had been
                         shortlisted.

On 23rd April 2015 a presentation of prizes was held in Dublin at the Department of Education. I
attended the presentation along with Ms Gray, my mum and three friends, Laura Graham, Sophie
Bell and Minami Hizume. At the presentation we got a chance to look at the other entries that
had been shortlisted and listened to an inspiring speech from the Minister for Education, Jan
O’Sullivan. We were also told the history of the competition and how it started up. Minister Jan
O’Sullivan also presented each person with their prize. I received a large print of my picture and
a plaque. The day was very enjoyable.
