U17b Cavan Monaghan Champions
Congratulations to the U17 Football team on winning the Cavan Monaghan U17b League final today. They have had a really successful season and capped it today winning the final 5-0! Well done lads.
TY Activities
The last number of weeks have been really busy for our TY pupils. On top of their usual classes, modules, and projects they have enjoyed team building workshops, a seminar on friendship & relationships, the TY Architects in schools programme, the Cavan Drama festival, drumming lessons, juggling lessons, guidance and college presentations!
School Improvement Plans 2021/22
These plans are accessible on the school website. The current focus is on teachers using effective, higher order questioning in their classrooms which encourages pupils to engage with material in a deeper and more meaningful way. There is also a focus on more detailed feedback for pupils as well as an ongoing emphasis on literacy and numeracy.
World Junior Triathlon Championships 2021
Well done to Charlotte and Olivia Moore who travelled to Quarteira, Portugal in November to represent Ireland in their first world championships.
Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Well done to the many pupils who have been busy preparing shoeboxes for delivery to Eastern Europe and Africa. We are delighted to be able to engage with this project again this year. It is a practical expression of the school’s Christian ethos. In many cases these gifts may be the only one these children receive this Christmas and are therefore much appreciated.
Mini Companies
There are 16 mini companies operating in the school this year. Many of these will attend craft fairs/sales over the festive period. They will also produce an online sales catalogue again this year. Please look out for this on our social media channels.
Maths week
In late October the students really enjoyed the RSC maths week. Glorious weather allowed the maths teachers bring the classroom outside to engage pupils in a number of challenges around the school grounds. Thanks to Mr. Kavanagh and Ms. Henry for all of their work on this.
Art Grant
The Art Department was delighted to recently receive a grant from BLAST and the Department of Education. This grant will enable our students to work with a local artist to design a unique piece of visual art for our school. Well done to Ms. Burns and Ms. Crowe on securing this funding.
Our School Choir where recently invited to sing for Derryheen Churchat their Songs of Praise.
School Bank
Congratulations to the School bank, Connect 6 (pictured) who were placed in the top 8 in the country in the recent AIB Build a Bank National Final in the RDS. Together with running a school bank the group ran several initiatives around wellbeing and positive mental health in the school throughout the year called ‘Backing our school’. They won a special award in the RDS for all the great work they did in this area of mental wellbeing. The group contained Ben Reilly, Katie Dunne, Jamie Dugdale, Katie Griffith, Tosin Elegbede & Ewan Garland.
Connect 6 Bank Team
Amber Flag
Through the great work of the school bank, TY and the Student Council the school will receive a Pieta House Amber Flag for creating healthy, inclusive environments that support mental well-being and eradicate the stigmas associated with mental health issues.
Barcelona
The RSC biannual European trip is currently taking place. 25 pupils will visit the beautiful city of Barcelona where they took in sights such as the Sagrada Familia, Montserrat and Parc Güell. They also travelled to Portaventura theme park. Thanks to Ms McElwaine for organising this trip.

School Concert
The RSC Music Department held a lovely lantern lit Spring concert in March to showcase the talent within the school. This was well attended, and a follow up Summer concert, ‘Festival in the Field’ will take place in May.
Library Refurbishment
The Library is currently undergoing a refurbishment using funds raised by the Parents’ Association and the Student Council. It will be a peaceful, multifunctional study space available to all pupils when finished. To this end the Student Council have organised a whole school sponsored Fun Run to take place during Active Schools week in early May.
TY photography exhibition The TY Photography module are honoured to have an exhibition of their work on display in the Johnston Library, Cavan.
Cavan Hockey Shield On Saturday 23rd of March the Royal School welcomed Cavan Hockey club to the school to contest the annual Cavan Hockey Shield match. After a close game with a lot of great hockey played the Hockey Club prevailed after a penalty shootout and retained the shield. Thanks to CHC for a great game and their continued support of the school.
Zoo Trip
On March 20th, our 3rd year C.S.P.E class together with Mr. Patterson and Ms. Trenier went to Dublin Zoo for our C.S.P.E Action Project. It was both an educational & enjoyable trip.
Archery
Congratulations to Rogan Cunningham, a 3rd year pupil who has recently become the U17 National Indoor Archery champion. A great achievement.
Seachtain na Gaeilge 2019
During the week, a great effort was made to promote Irish and everyone was given the opportunity to take part in both the activities that took place and learn more about Irish culture. It is always our aim to promote a positive attitude in the school in relation to both the Irish language and culture. Many events were organized during the week, a Dance Workshop, Quiz (winners pictured), Pop Up Gaeltacht, competitions and lots more.
TY Update The TY programme continues to keep our pupils very busy. In the last month they have completed their First Aid training, they went out on their 2nd week of work experience, had mock interviews, undertook driving lessons, partook in two collaborative projects with other schools, undertook several projects in school, played volleyball matches, did Yoga, are preparing to go on their London trip and are also fulfilling a full timetable of school work!

LC 2020 Graduation The school held an online graduation service on September 24th for the LC class of 2020. This was an opportunity for the school to say farewell to a remarkable group of young adults who have contributed so much to the life of the school and who faced the most challenging of final years. Earlier that day we were delighted to welcome back Nathan Clarke and Sophie Reilly who performed their last duties as Head Boy & Girl be partaking in a tree planting ceremony to mark the occasion.
TY Awards On October 1st we held the annual TY Awards ceremony in the school. This acknowledged the great achievements of the TY class of 2019/20. Congratulations to our ‘Spirit of Transition Year’ winner, pictured below. Meanwhile the ‘Overall TY pupil of the year award 2019/20’ and the accompanying Wesley Anderson shield was shared, Rebecca Cherry & Louise Hastings both scoring identical grades & merits. The prospect of attaining these awards has been an excellent motivation for our transition year students since their introduction many years ago.
Deputy Head Boy & Girl
Congratulations and best wishes to Ben Ritchie and Rebecca Cherry who assume the roles of Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl. They will assist Head Boy Jamie Dugdale and Head Girl Katie Dunne this year.
Transition Year News
The TY Class of 2020/21 are well settled into their new year. Covid restrictions have meant some changes this year but the school is still endeavouring to provide as rounded and exciting programme as possible.
Michelle Harding from ‘School of Life’ delivered an Etiquette workshop. They enhanced a number of skills relevant to the workplace and life in general. Things such as tying a tie, setting a table, creating a good first impression, customer care, and much more.
This was a programme where students developed leadership skills concentrating on themes such as listening, adopting a positive attitude and respect. Students will now be certified as facilitators and hopefully can deliver the programme themselves to younger pupils.
Young Enterprise The Entrepreneurial spirit in the school continues to thrive. This year we have 9 mini companies in TY and 5 in First year. These students will all participate in the National Student Enterprise awards this year.
Charity Donation Many thanks to the current 2nd year pupils who ran mini companies last year. Despite their business experience being cut short in March, they remained determined to donate some of their hard-earned profits to charity. This month they donated €300 to two local charities, Down Syndrome Ireland and Cavan Palliative care. Well done to all concerned.
